Unsafe cargo forced ship to stop in Kiel

Wed Nov 13 19:31:17 CET 2013 Timsen

When passing the locks of the Kiel Canal in Kiel on Nov 14, 2013, around 11 a.m., the unsafe stowage of birch logs on deck of the "Hagland Chief" was remarked by the personell and officials called for an inspection. The ship was ordered to dock at the Voith Quay in the North port of Kiel where it berthed at 1.50 p.m. where the cargo was being controlled. It was found out that some of the logs had already shifted, and possibly more lost over board during the voyage, so the logs which were held by simple steel frames but were not secured otherwise had to be properly stowed again in Kiel. The vessel had been underway from Skulde to Oostende. This happened just a few days after the cargo vessel "Roseburg" lost 1500 tons of timber off Kiel which are still covering beaches at Falckenstein and Friedrichsort. Hagland Chief holed in grounding off Høllen

Mon Apr 29 10:10:28 CEST 2013 Timsen

On Apr 29, 2013, at 3.15 a.m. the "Hagland Chief" ran aground between Hunnsøya and Brennøyane off Søgne. The ship had a crew of 10 which was not injured and remained on board. The ship was able to refloat with own power and anchored off the shore in anticipation of being towed to port. The vessel had suffered a small hole in the bow in the grounding, but no water ingress was reported. The tug "BB Connector" took the casualty in tow and pulled it to Høllen. Also the lifeboat "Kaptein Egil J. Nygård" was sent to assist. The cargo ship was coming from Gdansk and was bound to Høllen. It had a pilot on board when the accident happened. There was blustery weather at the time of the grounding. Norwegian report with photos: http://www.fvn.no/lokalt/sogne/Lastebat-pa-grunn-i-natt-2401698.html#.UX4eFH08zMI
