Engine trouble in Gulf of St. Lawrence
The "Bow Pioneer" suffered a failure of the astern mode of its main engine while in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in position 48 19.79 N, 061 10.6 W, on July 19, 2018, at 06.25 a.m. The ship arrived at Montreal on July 24 at 9.05 p.m.
Engine room full of smoke
On June 25, 2018, at 11.30 p.m. the Finnish Coastguard was alerted due to a suspected fire in the engine room of the "Bow Pioneer" which had sailed from Ust-Luga on June 24 short past noon and was bound to Porvoo. The crew of 26 of the unloaded vessel had issued a mayday call SW of Kalbåda ground after smoke development in the engine room. The Coastguard in Porvoo, the patrol boat "Turva“ (IMO-No.: 9650377), and the MIRG Rescue Department in Turku and Helsinki responded. After the smoke was cleared, it turned out that there was no open fire, but an overheated electric motor had caused the smoke. The ship dropped anchor, but as the situation turned out to be stable, the tanker continued the voyage with own power, escorted by the "Turva" during the night hours as a precaution. It berthed at the Neste Oil Refinery on June 27 at 2.45 a.m.
DSME’s first ship ‘Bow Pioneer’ has been revived
‘Bow Pioneer’, the first ship built by DSME, has been revived after thirty years, said in the company's press release. The naming ceremony for Hull No. 2018, the world’s biggest 75,000 DWT chemical tanker ordered by Odfjell SE was held at E2 quay on 29th April. Mrs. Arnhild Odfjell, spouse of Mr. Bernt Daniel Odfjell, the former chairman of Odfjell, named her ‘Bow Pioneer’. It is the same name that was given to the first ship built by DSME, Hull No. 2001. DSME built two 22,500 DWT chemical tankers for Skibs A/S Storli, the predecessor of Odfjell SE in 1982. While the first Bow Pioneer has run her race, the owner came back to DSME in order to build a new vessel.
