Fire off Dunkerque

Fri May 11 10:00:59 CEST 2018 Timsen

On May 10, 2018, around 07:00 a.m. the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea was alerted by the CROSS Gris-Nez that the crew of the "GV Arent" was fighting a fire in the engine room. The vessel was 20 nautical miles northeast of Dunkerque At 07:25 a.m. the British crew managed to extinguish the fire aboard his ship. Two crew members who were intoxicated by the smoke were evacuated and transported to the hospital in Bruges by a Belgian helicopter sent by the MRCC of Oostende (Belgium). At 7:30 a.m. the vessel resumed its route to Ramsgate, escorted by the lifeboat "Jean Bart" of the SNSM station of Dunkerque. Once the limits of the British area were reached, an RNLI boat took over from the SNSM 28 miles off Ramsgate to escort the ship to port. When the Ramsgate RNLI arrived on scene, there was no sign of the fire, which had been in the exhaust lagging of the generator. As the casualty vessel was still capable of motoring the all-weather lifebaot escorted it back to Ramsgate, where it was berthed in the outer harbour and attended by the Fire Service.
