Migrants taken to Malta following riot

Wed Jun 16 10:17:50 CEST 2021 Timsen

While the 'Ugur Dadayli' remained berthed in Sousse ssince June 13, it turned out that there was a 12-hour long deadlock with involved countries engaged in talks, after the 97 migrants on board threatened the crew members with riot, exposing knives or other objects. The vessel was about to continue the voyage to Sousse and disembark the migrants there, which became the reason for unrest and indeed seizure of the vessel. Malta finally, succumbed and agreed to accept the migrants. Malta's Coastguard took the migrants on board and transferred them to Malta. The vessel's crew was safe and uninjured.

Cargo ship rescued 97 distressed migrants

Sat Jun 12 21:01:36 CEST 2021 Timsen

The 'Ugur Dadayli' was requested to rescue 97 distressed migrants east of Sfax in pos. 34 56 54.0N, 012 0 E in the morning of June 12, 2021. The ship, which had left Sfax some hours earlier en route to Sousse, picked up the migrants from a dinghy with water ingress. It was carrying Libyan, Syrian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani migrants. There were also women and children on board. After the rescue, a dispute purportedly broke out between Malta and Tunisia as to which country should take in the migrants. This led to the migrants rioting and threatening to damage the ship with tools. After 12 hours of negotiations, Malta allowed the migrants to disembark following intervention by the Turkish foreign ministry. The rescue and disembarkation of the 97 migrants was not communicated by the Maltese government or the Armed Forces of Malta.
