Aluminium vessel smashed between two ships

Wed Jul 18 15:04:23 CEST 2018 Timsen

On July 14, 2018, the f/v "Kristi" lost power at Clak'S Pt. in the Bristol Bay in Alakska, and the tide pushed it between two much larger ships, the "Sohoh" and "Gordon Jensen" where it lodged on a Yokohama fender. The "Kristi" sank, and the captain and crew escaped with seconds to spare. Shortly after midnight the "Kristi" lost power. The tide was coming in, and the boat floated in the current at 5 knots. While its skipper Jan Medhaug and deckhand Kyle Brojakowski worked to restore power to the 32-foot aluminum drift boat, Medhaug’s wife, Kayla Breeden went to the stern to hang a protective buoy. She could see two large ships. The "Sohoh" was anchored about 15 feet from the "Gordon Jensen". About 10 seconds after Breeden hung the buoy, the "Kristi" struck the "Gordon Jensen" and ended up getting jammed between the two vessels, pushed up against their Yokohama fender that was between the two of them and started to violently smash between the two vessels. The fender pinned the "Kristi" at the bow. The aluminum boat bounced between the two steel ships. Medhaug radioed the "Gordon Jensen" for assistance, and the fish-processor lifted Breeden off the embattled boat in a man basket.Medhaug and Brojakowski attempted to situate the "Kristi" so that she could stay afloat through the incoming tide. They hoped to free her from between the ships at slack tide, when the boat would no longer be pinned to the fender. At the screeching groan of twisting metal, Medhaug and Brojakowski finally abandoned ship. They scrambled onto the fender a moment before the "Kristi" capsized, bow over stern, and sank beneath the waves in seconds. The "Gordon Jensen" brought Medhaug and Brojakowski aboard in the same man basket that had rescued Breeden 20 minutes earlier. In the aftermath, the US Coast Guard was investigating the incident. Fish factory ran aground

Fri Dec 25 11:19:07 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Gordon Jensen" ran aground on Dec 19, 2015, near Bella Bella, 172 miles southeast of Prince Rupert. The Canadian Coast Guard responded to the incident and the U.S. Coast Guard was later involved. The "Gordon Jensen" had f 20,000 gallons fuel and other pollutants on board. The fish factory was meanwhile refloated and towed to Ketchikan’s Vigor Shipyard for repairs on Dec 21, escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard. Icicle hired divers to assess the damage and the fish processing vessel will be at Vigor Shipyard until Jan 22 for repairs. The cause of the incident was still under investigation and no injuries were reported. Report with photo: http://petersburgpilot.com/story/2015/12/24/News/Icicle-vessel-runs-aground/4328.html
