Engine breakdown off Oskarshamn
Coming from Rotterdam, where the bulkcarrier had sailed on Nov 1, the "King Sugar" suffered a breakdown of its main engine in the Kalmar Strait off Oskarshamn on Nov 8, 2016. The ship has dropped anchor off the port. After a while the engine power was restarted and the bulk carrier proceeded to the port on Nov 9 at noon. The local authorities ordered safety inspection of the vessel after docking.
Dead bodies found on a stairway
Two two decomposing bodies, believed to be stowaways, were found on the "King Sugar" in Durban harbour on June 22, 2014, shortly after it docked at the Maydon Wharf. They were discovered by the ship's engineer on a stairway leading to one of the vessel’s hatches. The cause of death was unknown and the bodies have not been identified. The ship had sailed from San Lorenzo on May 28 with a spell at Cape Town from June 13-16. The TNPA immediately notified the relevant authorities after the bodies were found. The police and the South African Maritime Safety Association launched an investigation. An inquest docket has been opened.
