Contract with offshore ship cancelled

Thu Jun 18 12:12:00 CEST 2015 Timsen

The hunt for the missing MH370 flight has taken a massive blow after Malaysia called off one of three ships searching for the plane. Kuala Lumpur has cancelled the contract with the "GO Phoenix". The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) confirmed that the ship was to pull out of the search on June 19. The ship's work has been so vital to the mission that even though its equipment was badly damaged in a storm it returned to the search area after repairs with only a week left of its contract. The ATSB have given no explanation of why the Malaysians decided not to renew the contract. The vessel is operated by Maryland-based Phoenix International, who played a crucial role in finding the wreckage of the Air France Flight 447. The two remaining vessels, the "Fugro Discovery" and the "Fugro Equator", are operated by the Dutch company Fugro NV Report with photos: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3129515/Hunt-MH370-scaled-Malaysia-calls-one-three-ships-searching-despite-50-Malaysians-dying-board.html

Go Phoenix forced to Fremantle for repairs after waves damaged tow system

Wed Jun 10 10:55:38 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Go Phoenix", one of the ships involved in the search for the MH 370 wreck, was forced back to the port of Fremantle on June 8, 2015, for repairs after giant waves crashing over the deck of the ship broke the deep tow system. A significant amount of welding is required to rectify the damaged frame. Two other vessels remained in the southern Indian Ocean but one has been forced to suspend search operations due to unfavourable conditions. The "Go Phoenix" returned to sea on June 10. The number of vessels involved in the search has already been cut from four to three during the winter months, due to the dangerous conditions.
