Shrimper still afloat after collision with Gloria May
On Aug 25 the 74-foot shrimp boat "Capt. Le" was still afloat after it collided with the "Gloria May" the previous day, but efforts to recover it were thwarted by weather. The accident occurred about 18 miles south of Pascagoula about 10:40 p.m. on Aug 24. All three crew onboard the shrimp boat successfully entered into their life raft and were subsequently picked up by the "Gloria May". Boat crews from Coast Guard Station Pascagoula picked them up and took them to shore. The shrimping vessel sustained significant damage. It had approximately 10,000 gallons of diesel and 200 gallons of oil on board. A pollution investigation team was sent to the site, but had to turn around because of seven-foot waves and unsafe weather, a spokesman said. The Coast Guard planned to fly over the site in the morning of Aug 26 to assess the situation. The "Gloria May" reported minimal damage and no injuries have been reported from either vessel. The cause of the incident has not been determined and was under investigation.
