Engine failure off South Iceland
The "Gnúpur" went adrift on Oct 14, 2016, close to the shore by Vík ín Mýrdal due to an engine damage with a crew of 30 on board. The ship was drifting slowly two miles off Dyrhólay, and the anchor has been dropped. Police was on the way to the area, and a lifeboat and a pilot are on their way from Vestmannaeyjar islands. The Icelandic Coast Guard received a call around 9:30 a.m. from the vessel, located west of Dyrhólaey. A helicopter, rescue workers from Vestmannaeyjar islands and from South Iceland, as well as a tugboat were alerted. A ship, located in the vicinity, was also called to assist. The anchor was holding, and the weather in the area was good. Meanwhile the crew got the engine running again. The rescue forces were stood down. It was not yet clear whether the ship would return to port or continue the voyage.
