Search for missing crew suspended
The active search of crewmembers of the "Geroi Arsenala" in the Black Seahas been suspended on Apr 21. The search covered the area of 350 square nautical miles of water surface. The operation involved 13 vessels and two helicopters of Russia's Ministry for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense. By the end of the search operation, only six vessels were deployed with rescue ship "Spasatel Demidov" (Marine Rescue Service of Rosmorrechflot) as the leading ship. No signs of the missing crewmembers of the ship were found. No signs of oil spill were seen. The search was continued by vessels passing the area. The vessel had a twelve-strong crew consisting of nine Ukrainians, two Russians and a Georgian. A motorman (Ukrainian) was rescued and the bodies of three more sailors were recovered from water while the plight of fate of eight crewmembers remains unknown.
Three bodies recovered, no oil spill
Reports of oil spills in the Kerch Strait following the wreck of the "Geroi Arsenal" have not been confirmed. Specialists continued to monitor water and shoreline where any potential spills may drift to. The Black and Azov Sea Department of Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources were still monitoring the water and shoreline. The cargo ship carried about 30 tonnes of diesel fuel. The rescuers set up oil containment booms to keep the oil from washing ashore. Only one motorman was picked up from water alive, suffering from severe hypothermia. So far, three dead bodies have been recovered and identified, and eight people were still missing. Search operations were still being conducted.
Vessel sank in Kerch Strait, two dead, nine missing
On Apr 19, 2017, at 3.40 a.m. the "Geroi Arsenala" broke in two sank in the Kerch Strait 14 kilometers off the coast on a water depth of 100 meters. Seven crew members were missing, one Ukrainian man was rescued and four sighted for a moment in the water with life jackets, but then disappeared in the high waves. At 4 a.m. the MRCC Novorossiysk reported the disappearance of the vessel from the Kerch Strait Traffic Control Center radars. It had been was transiting the Kerch Strait in southern direction, en route from Rostov-on-Don to Turkey with a cargo of grain. At 5 a.m. the vessel was reported to have sunk. Four crew members were spotted in the water and seven more still missing, an SAR operation with units of the Navy, Coastguard and helicopters was under way. Involved were the "Episkop", "Armada Nawigator", "Barnet", "Ajgas" and "Aelos" as well as the tug "Demidow". The man picked up from water was in critical condition, suffering from severe hypothermia. Two more were recovered dead in the morning. The remainder was not seen again. The water temperature was 7-8 degrees Celsius, on scene was stormy weather. The crew included two Russians, among them the captain, nine Ukrainians and one Georgian nationalities. There were 30 tons of fuel oil on board.
