Germn frigate shot down drone for the first time
On Aug 30, 2022, the "Sachsen" shot down a drone for the first time in the Baltic Sea in front of the Putlos military training area in the Hohwacht Bay. The success report about the shooting came from the armaments company Rheinmetall. The Düsseldorf military technology forge has formed a joint venture with the Bavarian company MBDA Germany. The frigate "Sachsen" was selected for testing because it is optimized for air defense. The laser campaign, which will run until mid-2023, will be monitored by Defense Technical Service 71 in Eckernförde. The weapon system was delivered in a container and mounted on the frigate's middle deck on the port side. After the drone was successfully shot down, the laser is to be tested against other threats in further tests by the summer of 2023. It should also be used to combat small motor boats or missiles. The joint integration and test phase of the naval demonstrator started in November 2021, which the ARGE integration team concluded with a successful Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) on the test site in Unterlüß. This was followed by transport to the frigate in Kiel. The naval arsenal in Kiel was used for this purpose during the Kiel Week. In July the first test campaign took place in Eckernförde Bay in front of the base of the WTD 71 in Surendorf. The performance of the various sensors was demonstrated in the course of the tests. This also included the electro-optical sensors of the consortium and the radar. In addition, the interaction of all components and processes between the industry and the crew as well as the systems on board the "Saxony" were tested. The first phase of testing consisted of the proof of the high-energy laser (HEL) for the close range of the frigate. In further tests, the prerequisites for the early use of laser weapons in the Navy are to be created. The industry wants to make the systems available for use as soon as possible.
German fregate deployed to pipeline gas leaks
The 'Sachsen-F 219' and Swedish surveillance aircraft were active in the area around the two locations where explosions were believed to have hit the gas pipelines Nordstream 1 and 2. The fregate sailed around the waters at the northern leak sites since the morning of Sep 27. The Danish defense has increased its presence around Bornholm with, among other things, a larger helicopter readiness and patrol boats. The Swedish Coast Guard has also had an observation plane controlling both areas with gas leaks.
Training mission aborted after three cases of corono virus
The 'Sachsen' had to abort its training mission in the Baltic Sea and had to return to the naval base in Kiel on Feb 23, 2021, after three of the about 200 crew members were infected with the corona virus. It was planned to start the training off Neustadt on Feb 23, but three testings for Covid 19 during the transit from Wilhelmshaven to Kiel were positive. All contact persons were disembarked once the ship had berthed at the Scheer Jetty. The infected soldiers among with 20 more comrades were isolated on Feb 23 and were now quarantined. As no other crew members had positive PCR tests, the release of the ship was to be decided on Feb 25. The 'Sachsen' had left Wilhelmshaven only on Feb 22 after lengthy repairs of an explosion damage caused by a malfunctioning missile.
