Barge lost rudder blade
The "Gerda", 776 ts (EU-No.: 04017760), being loaded with gravel slag, lost its starboard side rudder in the lock of Berkenthin on Nov 29, 2018. The ship was en route from Salzgitter to Lübeck on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. At 3:25 p.m. the trip was interrupted at the lock in Berkenthin. At 3.30 p.m., the lockkeeper called the water police after the rudder blade broke when sliding down the ledge. When the water police arrived, the ship had berthed at pilings underneath the lock. The broken rudder blade still hung on a safety chain and could be pulled back on deck with the on-board crane. The ship still had two rudders on the port side and midships. After several tests, the skipper was allowed to continue the voyage on Nov 30 at 11 a.m. to a special terminal for bulk goods on the Trave, where the 750 tons of gravel slag were unloaded. The transit was allowed after consultation with the competent authorities which ordered a tug escort. The ship left the Klug Port in Lübeck again on Dec 3 at 8.15 a.m.
