Missing crew member found dead inside ship

The SAR operation of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for the missing crew member Mohamad Saiful Ashnar of the "Geos" had to be conducted with care due to gas leak which has complicated it. The Bomba Miri Zone has stationed four gas threat experts at the scene to assist the search of the vessel which was about five nautical miles offshore Tanjong Baram, Kuala Baram in the morning of Apr 18. The assets deployed for the operation included the KM "Siakap", "Pengalang 2" from the MCG, the "Neo Petro 18", MP "Perdana Frontier" and MP "Nautical Aleesya" from Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd. The SAR operation was focussing on the stricken vessel as survivors told that Mohamad Saiful Ashnar, who is from Negeri Sembilan, was not present during the headcount made by the captain of the "Geos" during the incident. However, surface SAR operation conducted on the surrounding waters continued to be carried out by the MCG, the "Petras" and KD "Paus" from the Malaysian Royal Navy. Aircraft deployed by Petronas also scanned through the SAR area, in collaboration with assets from the Royal Malaysia Air Force and the PDRM Air Unit. The remains of Mohamad Saiful Ashnar were found inside the ship about 1.30 p.m. by four Miri Zone Fire and Rescue Department personnel. The victim's body was then taken to the Labuan Marina Jetty before being handed over to the police for further action.

Oil exploration vessel in flames, two injured, one missing

The "Geos" suffered an explosion in the engine room and ensuing fire on Apr 17, 2018, at 3 a.m., 10 kilometers off Kuala Baram, northwest Kalimantan, near Malaysia Brunei border. The crew had to jump in water. The SAR operation started at 3.15 a.m. One Malaysian crew member of on the whole 38 people on board went missing. The remainder were rescued, two of them were injured. Muhammad Hafiz Ismail, 36, burned 20 percent on body parts and Khairul Isma Ismail, 35, was wounded in the face and was taken to Miri Hospital for treatment. Five crew members were Indonesians, one a Thai citizien and the rest were Malaysians. Meanwhile the "Geos", which had been engaged in offshore oil exploration, was fully engulfed in flames. Nearby offshore tugs were trying to douse the flames. The Miri District Maritime Director sent the APPMM "Nabawang Nabed 23" and the KM "Siakap" to the accident site. They were assisted by the "Hisyam 8" and "Neoptro 18". Meanwhile the open fire was extinguished, but the blaze was still on inside the "Geos". The effort to enter the ship was dangerous due to the presence of toxic gas.
