Medevac off Willapa Bay
The Coast Guard medically evacuated an ill man off the "Garnet Leader", 25 miles west of Willapa Bay, Washington, in the morning of Jan 11, 2019. Watchstanders at the Sector Columbia River command center received the medevac request at 5 a.m. from a shore side doctor who recommended the ill man needed to be hospitalized within six to eight hours. The helicopter aircrew launched at 6:15 a.m. and completed the hoist at 6:45 a.m. An aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, from Coast Guard Sector Columbia River, safely conducted a hoist of the 29-year-old Ukrainian national who was suffering from severe abdominal pain. The helicopter aircrew launched at 6:15 a.m. and completed the hoist at 6:45 a.m. Warrenton Fire Department paramedics transported the patient to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. The ill man is the second engineer aboard the vessel which is scheduled to moor in Vancouver, Washington, on Jan 12.
NYK Vessel Receives Panama Canal’s Green Connection Award
Two NYK-operated vessels — Garnet Leader, a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), and NYK Remus, a containership — have been awarded the Panama Canal Authority’s Green Connection Award, a new initiative started on January 1 to recognize vessels who demonstrate excellent environmental stewardship.
