Tanker aground on the Rhine
Enroute from Antwerp to Ludwigshafen the "Galileo", loaded with 1710 tons sodium hydroxide, ran aground on the Rhine on the Geisenrück between Oberwesel and St. Goar. on Aug 2, 2017, at 4.45 a.m. It got stuck on a rocky crop. The tanker suffered water ingress in the foreship as well as in the engine room. The situation could be brought under control by the crew. Since the tanker is a double hull vessel, the cargo area was not affected. Shipping at the accident site was restricted. The left side Rhine fairway at the Geisenrück was closed for ship traffic. In addition to the water police St. Goar, the master of the water and shipping office was also on site. Experts were currently on the way to investigate the damaged vessel. It is intended to lighter the tanker so that it can be towed to the Loreley port, where it was to be unloaded. It was not yet clear when the tanker would be freed. An investigation into the accident was lauched. German report with photo: http://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/117717/3699331
