Blazing trawler sank off Saint-Guénolé
On Nov 28, 2017, at 2.20 p.m. a fire broke out on the "Porz Streilhen", 46,2 gt, in the Audierne Bay. The crew is safe and sound. The crew of three alerted the CROSS Corsen, and very quickly another trawler retrieved the three fishermen safe and sound. They were immediately brought back to the port of Bigouden and were medically examined. Meanwhile, the lifeboats "Amiral Amman“ of the SNSM station Audierne, the "Prince d'Eckmühl“ from Penmarc’h and the "Yves and François Olivaux“ of the station Ile de Sein headed to the "Porz Steilhen" which was adrift 15 nautical miles off Penmarc'h. The drifting trawler came dangerously close to the port of Saint-Guénolé at the end of the afternoon. The Maritime Prefecture Atlantic dispatched the emergency tug "Abeille Bourbon" which considered that the towing of the blazing wreck was impossible. The Maritime Prefecture ordered the tug to sink the trawler using its powerful water pumps. Short time before the pumps went into action, the boat sank 27 meters deep 2,4 nautical miles from the port of Saint-Guénolé at 7.30 p.m. The risk of pollution was low, the ship had only some kerosene and engine oil on board. An urgent notice to mariners was issued to report the presence of the wreck.
