FV BEN MY CHREE

Sun Mar 13 19:45:37 CET 2011 Timsen

The "Ben my Chree" which was being towed to land after it was abandoned off the Isles of Scilly has sunk in the night of Mar 12. The partially afloat gill netter was being towed by the fisheries protection vessel "St. Piran" which had secured a line to remove it from a shipping lane. It went down just over a mile (1.6km) off Gwennap Head.

FV BEN MY CHREE

Fri Mar 11 09:46:22 CET 2011 Timsen

On Mar 11, 2011, at 00.27 a.m. Falmouth Coastguard received a Mayday distress call from the "Ben My Chree" with five crew onboard reporting that they were taking water and sinking 17 nautical miles ENE of the Isles of Scilly. The Rescue Helicopter R193 and St Marys Lifeboat were scrambled. The wind was a force 5 from the WSW with a moderate to rough sea. "R193" attempted to lower the Coastguard pump down onto the vessel but this proved impossible due to the weather conditions. The water level in the vessel was still rising, so "R193" winched four off the vessel The St Marys Lifeboat saved the skipper. The crew transferred to Culdrose. The St Marys lifeboat stood alongside the "Ben My Chree" until first light. As the night progressed she sank lower in the water, the engine stopped, its AIS ceased to transmit and its navigation lights went out.
