Shipping company pays compensation for reef damage
The shipping company of the "Alex" was ordered to pay a compensation after its vessel damaged around 10,177 square meters of coral reef when it ran aground in the Karimata strait on April 12, 2017. The shipping company agreed to pay the amount of approximately US dollars 1.346 million in March 2019.
VLCC refloated by SMIT Salvage
The "Alex" was refloated in the afternoon of May 4, but remained near the grounding site for checks. At least three tugs were deployed to pull the ship off. On May 5 the "Pacific Valour" (IMO: 9443516), "Logindo Stout" (IMO: 9548639) and "Wei Gang Tuo 10" (IMO: 9548639) were still on scene. SMIT Singapore Pte Ltd. and PT Samudera Indonesia were contracted to undertake the salvage operation, including lightering of the vessel by ship to ship transfer of cargo. The crude oil tanker "Caktra Patriot" (IMO: 525019680) was at anchor nearby. The "Alex" was then tanken in tow to Singapore by the tug "Pacific Valour" (IMO: 9443516).
Grounded tanker to be lightered
The owner Euronav of the "Alex" on April 14 have contracted SMIT Singapore and Samudera to refloat the vessel after its grounding in Indonesian waters. The ship will have to be lightered by another tanker. There was no breach in the hull nor mechanical failures. Ob April 19 a tank inspection with the presence of a class surveyor took place.
