The port began returning to normal on June 28, with all docks due to be reopened except for dock No. 4, where further safety checks were to be carried out. The situation in Aqaba was reportedly under control. The incident is under investigation. The ship remained stationary in port as of June 29.
At least 11 dead, hundreds injured in gas accident
A tank with 25 tons of chlorine gas fell onto the main deck of the 'Forest 6' at Aqaba Port on June 27, 2022, during loading operations. The tank was damaged, and a big thick gas cloud covered the ship and quayside within seconds. There were between 25 and 30 tons of chilled and liquid chlorine in the container when it was lost, and the toxic chemical transformed a deadly cloud that quickly spread and made people in the port flee in all directions. At least 11 people died, and 199 were treated at local hospitals for poisoning, many of them being in critical condition. The death might be even higher. Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh flew to Aqaba and ordered the interior minister to launch an investigation into the accident. According to the port's deputy director, the reason for the crane's loss of the container was a broken steel wire. Local residents were asked to stay at home and close windows. The ship had arrived from Djibouti on June 27 and was due to call at Djibouti with the cargo loaded at Aqaba, which included the chlorine gas tank.
