Engine room fire in Flushing
On Dec 28, 2017, at 12.20 a.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Flintstone" in the east port of Flushing at the Pechiney-Marine Terminal in Quarleshaven. The Vlissingen-Oost port area in Ritthem. A private fire fighting team, the so-called COBRA-team from Sluiskil, was called which can pierce the walls of enclosed spaces and then inject water in order to combat hard-to-reach fires. Later, a foam extinguisher from Borssele and a water tank from East-Souburg were also called. Around 12.45 a.m. the MIRG of the fire brigade was also alerted which is specialized in combating incidents on board of ships. At 01.45 a.m. an ambulance team was again urgently called to the site. At 02.15 a.m. the fire was still not exactly located because of the smoke and heat on board. Around 02.40 a.m. the fire was under control. Meanwhile the fire brigade was busy ventilating. The COBRA team was no longer needed. Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam completes maintenance programme for fallpipe vessel Flintstone
The fallpipe vessel Flintstone has departed from Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam, part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, following a six-week programme of maintenance and repairs together with her first Special Survey. Owned and operated by the Tideway group of companies, a division of the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME, the 155-metre, 20,000 tonne DP2 Flintstone is the flagship of the Tideway fleet. Her equipment includes an active heave compensated ROV with state-of-the-art survey equipment and a 200 kW mass flow excavation tool for the removal of seabed materials.
Attack repelled, pirate mother ship escaped
The German frigate "Lübeck" in vain tied to stop a pirate mother ship in the Horn of Africa by a shot in the bow on Jan 17, 2012. The mother ship that tried to escape into the direction of Yemen in the morning shortly after 8 a.m. The frigate received an emergency call of the "Flintstone" as two skiffs attempted to attack the ship. A private security team was able to repel the attack. The pirates returned to the mother ship and tried to escape. The "Lübeck" tried to stop the mother ship for a search. As the pirates disregarded all signals first shots were fired over the bow of the fleeing ship. As the ship did not stop, the frigate targeted the bow. The pirates then contacted the frigate via VHF. They reported the existence of several hostages on board and announced to oppose a boarding by force of arms. The frigate "Lübeck" thereupon ceased the fire, but tried to stop the pirate mother ship several times but was outmaneuvered. The "Flintstone" continued her maiden voyage to the Suez Canal.
