New ferry assisted troubled Solo Challenge sailor

On Dec 22, 2023, the Finnish Global Solo Challenge sailor Ari Känsäkoski was troubled with his Fujj yacht 'Zerochallenge' in the Indian Ocean and needed fuel and supplies. The mast was broken, but there was no immediate danger. Känsäkoski built an emergency rig so that he could use the remaining sails reasonably well. In addition, he got marine diesel from a Japanese fishing vessel, which was, howver, not the best fuel for the engine, and Känsäkoski wanted regular diesel. The 'Finncanopus', which wasn't even originally supposed to be in this region about 2000 kilometers off Madagascar, was recognized by Känsäkoski, whereupon he immediately contacted Timo Vanhala of Finnlines, whom he had previously met. The 'Finncanopus,' was on its way to Durban and rendezvoused with the yacht on Jan 11, 2024. The captain Jyrki Repo drove around the 'Fuji' to smooth out the waves and stopped on the windward side, so the single hand sailor could approach the pilot door. There was still a significant current from the bow to the stern, and periodic swells made the approach challenging. After a few tries the boat got close enough, and the cast line could be handed over. After a quick stretch, the crew of the 'Finncanoous' began to lower the canisters into the casting line, while Jyrki kept Finncanopus in slow motion, sideways to the wind. After the canisters were lowered, the yacht moved to a safe distance, reeled in the rope and started to lift the canisters up. From the 'Finncanopus', some kitchen's gifts were also lowered into the floating canisters attached to a rope, which he later picked up, including fresh thin pancakes, sweets and a selection of delicious sandwiches. The yacht could now continue towards Durban on clean diesel. New ship diverted on delivery voyage due to threat by Houthi militants

The management of the Finnish company Finnlines has ordered the captain of the “Finncanopus”, which is on a delivery trip from China to Finland, to avoid navigation through the Red Sea and transit through the Suez Canal, given the evolution of the attacks by Houthi militias on merchant ships sailing through the area. On its delivery trip, the ship brings cargo to Mediterranean ports, so it is likely that it will transfer at an intermediate port on its journey – perhaps the Canarian ports – before continuing to Finland, where it will arrive 12 days after schedule.
