Search for missing tug crew stopped
Five days after the collision of the tug "Ayu Lestari" with the "Mare Tirrenum", the authorities on Mar 12 stopped the search for the missing victims in the waters of the Rupat District.
Tanker sank tug, two missing
On Mar 7, 2016, the "Mare Tirrenium" collided with the tug "Ayu Lestari" in the Malacca Strait in position 01 57N 101 51E, off the eastern coast of Pulau Rupat Island. The "Ayu Lestari" sank five miles east off Pulau Rupat island. She had been underway with the barge "Malioboro 1" which was carrying shipment of palm oil The barge washed up ashore. During the first minutes after the accident, the tug's master and another man were rescued by the pilot boat "Pandu Selat Morong". The Navy ship "Tedung" and a patrol boat were involved in the search for the two still missing crew members, and the tanker's master broadcasted a man-overboard message to request assistance from passing vessels. The tanker – under charter to Pertamina-Chevron with an Inodnesian crew - was in ballast, en route from Hutan Ayu to Dumai, where she was scheduled to be loaded. Following the incident the tanker got underway once more for Dumai, where her AIS signal showed her stopped offshore in the afternoon. Weather conditions and visibility were good at the time of the incident, and the cause of the collision was not yet clear. Dutch Navy assisted in medevac
On June 25, 2011, the Dutch naval vessel Hr. Ms. "Johan de Witt" carried out a medevac from the "Mare Tirrenium" near Bonaire. The ship was in the vicinity due to an exercise and was requested by the Coast Guard to assist the tanker. which was at a position five miles west of Little Bonaire. A medical team was transferred to the "Mare Tirrenum" with an RHIB. The patient was stabilised and winched up with a Lynx helicopter of the "Johan de Witt" which transported him to the SEHOS hospital at Curaçao where he was successfully treated.
