Tanker sank tug, two missing

Mon Mar 07 20:53:56 CET 2016 Timsen

On Mar 7, 2016, the "Mare Tirrenium" collided with the tug "Ayu Lestari" in the Malacca Strait in position 01 57N 101 51E, off the eastern coast of Pulau Rupat Island. The "Ayu Lestari" sank five miles east off Pulau Rupat island. She had been underway with the barge "Malioboro 1" which was carrying shipment of palm oil The barge washed up ashore. During the first minutes after the accident, the tug's master and another man were rescued by the pilot boat "Pandu Selat Morong". The Navy ship "Tedung" and a patrol boat were involved in the search for the two still missing crew members, and the tanker's master broadcasted a man-overboard message to request assistance from passing vessels. The tanker – under charter to Pertamina-Chevron with an Inodnesian crew - was in ballast, en route from Hutan Ayu to Dumai, where she was scheduled to be loaded. Following the incident the tanker got underway once more for Dumai, where her AIS signal showed her stopped offshore in the afternoon.
