Ferry disabled by fire
A fire broke out in the engine room of the 'Toshima 2' in the vicinity of pos. 29 14 00 N, 129 24 00 E, off the coast of Badishijima in the Kagoshima Prefecture on Dec 29, 2023. A total of 29 passengers and crew were on board the vessel, none of whom were injured. The vessel was disabled and had to be taken in tow in the morning of Dec 30. It was docked at the wharf in Kagoshima Port, where officials from the 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters and the operator Toshima-Mura boarded the ferry to investigate the cause of the fire in detail. The ferry's schedule was taken over by another vessel from the owners' company for the rest of the year.
