Barge refloated

Sun Jan 07 14:36:11 CET 2018 Timsen

The "Ewa" could be refloated on Jan 6 around 5 p.m. by several tugs. A patrol vessel from Rijkswaterstaat was also present at the ship. Attempts to pull the ship smoothly off had failed earlier in the morning. About an hour before the highest water level, the first attempt to get the ship refloated smoothly succeeded. The ship which was a bit folded was berthed in the South-Beveland Canal at Schore. Dutch report with photos: https://www.omroepzeeland.nl/nieuws/103059/Schip-losgetrokken-bij-Hansweert

Grounded barge threatened to break apart

Sat Jan 06 13:48:22 CET 2018 Timsen

On Jan 6, 2018, at 7.30 a.m. the "Ewa", 801 ts (EU-No.: 8348099), ran onto a dike at the west pier of the foreport of the South-Beveland canal near Hansweert, opposite the traffic post Hansweert on the Westerscheldt. A first attempt to refloat the barge with the tug "Bravo" failed. Teams of the fire brigade, police, Rijkswaterstaat with the patrol boat "RWS 79" and salvage companies with the tugs "Multraatug 22" and "Multraship Resonder" of Multraship from Terneuzen and the "Charlie" were on site to keep the ship from breaking when the tide ran out. The stern was hanging in the air, and the hull showed visible signs of fold. The next salvage attempt could take place around 5 p.m. The barge was loaded with scrap and was on its way from Vlaardingen to Dunkirk. Ship traffic was not hampered, the crew was safely taken off. The grounding was probably caused by a steering fault in combination with the outgoing current.
