Spanish frigate monitoring Russian submarine
The "Álvaro de Bazán" was monitoring the movements of the Russian submarine "Krasnodar" of the KILO II class, in the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean. as well as the tug 'Evgeniy Churov', which has accompanied the submarine in its transit to the port of Alexandria (Egypt). The monitoring of the vessel ended when both Russian ships separated to each take a different course. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO forces, especially maritime forces, have been closely following the movements of Russian units. In addition to the traditional deterrence missions of the Alliance's permanent naval groups, there has been increased surveillance of Russian ships transiting through the waters of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic or the Baltic near sovereign spaces. Spanish ships have been integrated into these groups, which join other allies to guarantee security in these waters and, in addition to exercising this deterrence, act as NATO's naval spearhead in the event of any crisis. Currently, three are integrated into two of the four naval groups of the Alliance: the minesweeper "Duero" in the mine countermeasures group, SNMCMG-2 and the Combat Supply Ship BAC "Patiño" and the frigate "Álvaro de Bazán" in the surface group, SNMG-2 Report with photo: https://www.larazon.es/espana/defensa/buque-armada-vigila-cerca-submarino-ruso-mediterraneo_2025031067ceb57539a0dc0001e70165.html.
