Crane destroyed power lines

Mon Mar 26 10:15:13 CEST 2012 Timsen

On Mar 25, 2012, around 9 a.m. the "Esmee" hit apower line on the Main-Danube-Canal at Schwanstetten in the Roth Community and caused a power shortage. The ship was enroute Vienna-Würzburg with a cargo of more than 900 tons grain. Two kilometers off the Leerstetten lock a crew member used the ship's crane to move the captainÄs car on the aft in preparation to get on board a second car in the lock. The crane was extended to a length of 10 metres during this manoever. The helmsman meanwhile had not realized the powerline with its 20000-V-cables, and three cables snapped. Two of them had to be removed later. The car crashed down onto the stern of the ship and was totally damaged which meant a loss of ca. 50.000 Euro. The crane also was kinked and had to be removed by a mobile crane once the ship had berthed near the lock. This operation was supported by a diver of the shipping authority in Nuernberg who fixed the crane which was hanging over the ship's stern. Ship traffic on the Main-Danube-Canal had to be stopped for seven hours until the power lines were secured by experts of N-Ergie. The damage at the ship was estimated to be around 50000 Euro, damage to the powerline had yet to be assessed, but was significant.
