Body which may belong to missing crew found at Banua beach

Two weeks after the "Emerald Star" sank off the Philippines coast, one body has been found. An unidentified body with a life jacket marking "Emerald Star" was found on Oct 28 on the island city of Banua. However, since the body was decomposed, it was buried on the island. 16 of the 26 Indians on board had been rescued. The Indian Navy had joined Philippines and Japan in the rescue operations to find the missing sailors. The Indian Ambassador in Manila was asked the body to be exhumed and brought to Manila for identification by DNA.

Five castaways turned over to Indian embassy

Five crew members rescued from the "Emerald Star" were turned over to the Indian Embassy. The rescued men, all Indians, have undergone medical examination in Santa Ana town before they were turned over to the Indian Embassy while the 11 other ship crew members remained aboard the ship that rescued them. The PCG continued the search for the 10 other who are still missing. The missing crew members were wearing life-saving gears when their ship capsized.

Five rescued crew embers transferred to hospital

The Philippine Coast Guard transferred five rescued crew members of the sunken "Emerald Star" from the bulk carrier "SM Samarinda" at Casambalangan, Sta Ana, Cagayan, Northeastern Luzon, in the morning of Oct 15. They were immediately brought to Gerry Filippetto Memorial Foundation Hospital for further medical treatment due to multiple physical injuries and head trauma sustained from the incident. The rescued Indian national were identified as follows: Chief Cook Kharty Kerthikeyan, 46 yrs old; Deck Fitter Dasari Prakash Rao, 37 years old; Chief Officer Kishore Kumar, 46 years old; Trainee Rama Durai Umadurai, 23 years old, and Trainee Joseph Pragash, 24 years old. According to survivors testimonies, the bulkcarrier had developed port side list prior to disaster, which couldn’t be put under control. The Japanese Coast Guard continued the SAR operation with the patrol boat "Nagura", following most possible drift tracks of missing sailors.
