Wreck will remain untouched

Fri Mar 26 11:20:17 CET 2021 Timsen

The 'Elegant II' which has been stuck in the river at Offerton Heugh, near Hylton Bridge since 2017, is not regarded as either a danger or a hazard to navigation and is unlikely to become so, the Sunderland City Council stated on March 24, 2021. While statutory powers to remove wrecks do exist, these impose no legal duty to act. To comply with legal requirements and be able to seek recovery of costs, the poor authority must form the view that the vessel is an obstruction or danger to the navigation of lifeboats, or be likely to become so, and this is not currently the case.. The vessel’s owner was reportedly informed about the situation in October 2017, when it was first reported, but it remains in situ. City leaders and other authorities have previously been urged to remove it over safety concerns, particularly fears for youngsters and others exploring the wreck. In June 2018 the Port of Sunderland said that the ship is the responsibility of the owner and posed no risk to other river traffic or marine pollution. Fishing vessel abandoned on River Wear since 16 months

Sun Feb 24 18:39:54 CET 2019 Timsen

The capsized wreck of the "Elegant II" on a stretch of the River Wear remains in the same position in the water 16 months after it first overturned. The "Elegant II" was discovered adrift on the Wear at North Hylton back in October 2017 near Hylton Bridge. The Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team located the vessel close to the north banks at Nab End after it had beached, but with the arrival of high tide, it refloated and then drifted to the south side at Ofteron Heugh. According to the Port of Sunderland the wreck did not pose a risk to river traffic or pollution but remained the responsibility of its owner. Other agencies, including police and coastguard, were aware of the matter.
