Sailing vessel abandoned in Benoa waters
On March 19, 2025, the 'Elaine Marie' started taking on water and was in danger of sinking in Benoa waters with one person aboard, who was successfully rescued by the bullk carrier 'United Crown' (IMO: 9660023) in a safe condition. At 3:38 p.m. LT the Benoa VTS received a Mayday signal on VHF channel 16. The vessel was located in pos. 08° 11.373’ S 115° 47.352’ E and requested immediate evacuation. At 3:47 p.m. the cargo ship contacted the sailing vessel, informing that they were approaching for rescue operations. At that time, it was seven nautical miles away from the distressed vessel. At 4:52 p.m. the crew prepared to deploy the pilot ladder and rescue boat. At 4:58 p.m. the 'United Crown' stopped its engines and began lowering the pilot ladder and rescue boat. At 5:30 p.m. the skipper was successfully transferred to the rescue boat. At 6:10 p.m. the Benoa VTS received a report from the vessel stating that the evacuation had been successfully completed. The survivor was now aboard the shipand would continue sailing towards Port Hedland, where he disembarked on March 23. Meanwhile, the 'Elaine Marie' was left floating at the incident site. The Benoa VTS issued a safety warning to vessels navigating the area, advising caution due to the floating wreckage. All passing vessels are advised to exercise caution and adhere to navigation directives from Benoa VTS.
