Longliner diverted to Stornoway after crew member suffered injury
A Stornoway Coastguard helicopter crew was called to action on Apr 29, being tasked to the "Brimoy", which was situated north of the Butt of Lewis and had an injured seaman on-board. The longliner which normally fishes for cod and haddock in the Barents Sea, had a crew of 14 and was in the first week of a six week fishing trip, fishing with hundreds of thousands of hooks up to 36 nautical miles astern. Following paramedic assessment, the vessel was advised to proceed to Stornoway to allow a 61 year old Faroese fisherman, with a shoulder injury, to gain medical treatment. Once alongside at Stornoway harbour, the "Brimoy" was met by Stornoway Fishermen’s Mission Supt. Finlay Macleod who took the crewman to Western Isles Hospital for treatment. Following treatment at the Accident and Emergency department, the fisherman was then discharged into Mission care and returned to his ship, which sailed the same day.
