Construction worker died in fire

Three accomodation containers aboard the "Eduard" in the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel were destroyed by fire in the evening of Jan 12, 2018. On 13.1. a construction worker was found dead in his burned-out residential container by the fire department which discovered the body of the 47-year-old man after completion of the extinguishing work on the barge in Brunsbüttel. At night, the construction worker had had a visit from a girlfriend of the same age. It came to alcohol consumption. Shortly before the outbreak of the flames, the couple from Cuxhaven got into an argument. Thereupon the woman left the container and went into another residence container. After a short while she noticed an intense smell of smoke and went back to the living container to alert her friend. The door of the container, however, was locked, and the man did not open despite knocking. Then the woman called the fire department. She was taken to hospital with a shock. The extinguishing work, however, was difficult for the Brunsbüttel fire department. The fire was complicated to reach as the barge was located on the lock island between the lock chambers. In order to get all rescue teams to the site as quickly as possible, the emergency services called for the small car ferry from Ostermoor, as the large 100-tonne ferries could not dock at the lock island. As too much time passed the first firefighters climbed over fences from the south side to the scene of the fire. The water supply was also difficult. On the construction site, there were no fire water hydrants available so that the water had to be pumped out of the Kiel Canal with pumps. During the mission, the lock was closed to shipping. Only on Jan 13 at 1 a.m. the first ship could pass the locks to the North Sea, the tanker "Bro Alma", 12162 BRZ (IMO No .: 9356610). The fire department was still busy until the early morning hours. All three residential containers burned out. The property damage amounted to more than 10,000 Euros. The cause of the fire was still unclear. The criminal police Heide launched an investigation.
