11 crew members still stuck on board after two years
When the East Express arrived in the port of Misrata on Jan 18, 2022, the crew thought it would unload its cargo of sugar and then depart. But port authorities declared the sugar unfit for consumption, and detained the ship. This legal obstacle prevented the delivery of the vessel to a trader in Libya, forcing the owner company - Mina Shipping Ltd. - to abandon it, with 11 crew members still on board: ten Syrians and one Egyptian who have been stuck there for two years.
Indian sailor stuck in Libya for 19 months back home
The SMaritime Union Of India (MUI) on Sep 28, 2022, said it has helped an Indian seafarer return from Libya where he was stuck at a port after the owners ceased operations of the 'East Express'. Roshan Raj, spent 19 months on the ship in breach of Maritime Labour Convention, 2006. He was abandoned at the Misrata Port for nine months. The man had been on board since February 2021, and he was successfully brought back to his home after the owners ceased operations of the vessel at the port of Misrata, Libya in January 2022. Besides the mental stress he was not paid the full salary. Moreover, the ship owners did not provide any co-operation to sign off. On board, provisions were limited and meals were cooked just once a day. The Union maintained rigorous daily communication with the officials in Libya, the Indian embassy in Libya, the ITF as well as Raj to ensure his earliest return.
Engine damage in Hereke
The "Nadalina" suffered a technical failure of the auxiliary engine together with the emergency support system at Hereke on June 25, 2018. The vessel's departure permission was cancelled by Maritime Authority until completion of permanent repairs. Repairs were being effected by the crew while the ship remained stationary at Hereke.
