Fisherman found missing crew member

A recreational fisherman has found the crew member who had gone missing from the 'Double Delight' after t´20 hours in the water. The fisherman, coincidentally a doctor, found the man while returning from a day out fishing. The man, aged in his 20s, was spotted floating in the water off Blacksmith Beach, south of Newcastle, on Nov 8 before 6:30 p.m. after he went overboard on Nov 7 at 11:30 p.m. Two Marine Rescue NSW vessels were tasked by Police Marine Area Command to search for the man off the coast of Redhead, about six kilometres north of where he was eventually found. He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment and was being monitored by medical staff under the surveillance of the Australian Border Force (ABF). He was in a serious but stable condition when he was taken to hospital, being treated for suspected hypothermia. He was conscious and alert when assessed.

Search for missing crew member

On Nov 7, 2024, a search was underway for a crew member who went over board from the 'Double Delight' south of Newcastle in New South Wales. The usual crew check found there was one person missing, and hadn't reported for duty. The crew searched the vessel and assumed he fell into the water. The crew member was last seen onboard the bulk carrier at about 11:30 p.m. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was coordinating the search and has tasked the Newcastle-based NSW Water Police and Marine Rescue NSW units, along with the Port Stephens-based Water Police vessel, to assist. at 12 p.m. The region's rescue helicopter has joined the search from the air with assistance from a chopper specialising in defence force rescues. The search was concentrated around the vessel about seven nautical miles off Redhead. The search was continued until nightfall. The 'Double Delight' was due to dock back in the Port of Newcastle at around midnight.
