Creane boom collapsed and injured Philippino crew member seriously

Thu May 16 10:07:37 CEST 2013 Timsen

A Filipino crew member of the "Nordic Visby" had to be taken to hospital in Tauranga with serious injuries after the main crane boom collapsed on the logging ship in the morning of May 15, 2013. He was a serious condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. The 42-year-old man was working on deck operating a winch, when an apparent mechanical fault resulted in the winch wire catching him across his body around 5.30 a.m. The main crane boom snapped and a steel rope struck him in the chest. Tauranga and Mount Maunganui St John Ambulance paramedics were called to the Port along with Mount Maunganui Police. The man was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition around 6 a.m. He suffered substantial injuries and lacerations to his upper chest. The Mount Maunganui Police was called to the incident site. Maritime New Zealand was aware of the incident and officials were to launch an investigation too. The crane boom was hanging twisted over the port side of the ship at that time. The "Nordic Visby" had berthed in Tauranga at 2.12 a.m. coming from Napier and being scheduled to depart on May 19 at 1.30 a.m. bound for Lanshan in China.
