Barge leaking on Mississippi
The US Coast Guard and local agencies responded to a barge leaking biodiesel near mile marker 93 on the lower Mississippi River near New Orleans on March 25, 2018. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report at 6 a.m. of the "Dixie Express" with two loaded red flag barges moored at industrial locks when an underway vessel reportedly caused a wake that resulted in the breakaway of one of the barges. The barge struck the concrete wharf wall resulting in a hole in the barge that has discharged an estimated 9,700 gallons of biodiesel. The maximum potential is 21,150 gallons of biodiesel. OMI Environmental Solutions has deployed boom and applied absorbent pads to mitigate the spread of oil. The leak is reportedly stopped. No waterway restrictions have been issued.

On Mississippi River, near mile marker 775.5, one mile north of the Hachie River inlet, on July 26 the "Merrick Jones", a 128-foot towing vessel pushing 26 barges, was in collision with the "Dixie Express" which was pushing two barges of acrylonitrile. An unknown amount of acrylonitrile was released into the water after one of the barges being pushed by the "Dixie Express" was damaged in the incident. The source of the spill has been secured. Additionally, three crewmembers aboard the "Dixie Expres"s were picked up by the "Henry Soudelier", another towing vessel in the area, and were taken to Methodist North Hospital in Memphis by EMS. The source of the spill has been secured. The Mississippi River is closed from Mile Marker 776 to 769 to recreational and commercial traffic due to the incident.
