Bridge closed after allision

Wed Nov 21 09:22:33 CET 2012 Timsen

Ship traffic on the Brussels-Scheldt Sea Canal was stopped after the "Pegase" on Nov 20, 2012, at 11.45 a.m. allided with a bridge in Humbeek at Grimbergen. Also the road traffic was closed after the accident. The ship was only minor damaged, but the bridge suffered severe damage as it was brought out of balance because one of the puller cables with which the bridge was opened, was had broken. Possibly also other cables were damaged internally. Road traffic was diverted, but the ships on the canal had to wait. The Sea Canal Service investigated the damage and brought in two derricks to stabilize the bridge at 4.30 p.m. Repairs were due to start on Nov 22.
