Research vessel suffered engine breakdown
The 'Diabaz' with 27 crew members on board, suffered an main engine breakdown, while conducting geological surveys on the northeast shelf of Sakhalin Island, on Sep 12, 2019. The vessel was immobilized when the coupling between the main engine and the gearbox broke. Attempts to repair the engine were unsuccessful, so the captain decided to request an emergency tow to a safe anchorage. The management of Gazprom Fleet LLC decided to provide assistance to Diabaz. The closest vessel to the 'Diabaz' was the Russian flagged tug/supply vessel 'Argi' which towed the casualty to a safe anchorage. On arrival, the tow was handed over to the Russian flagged salvage tug 'Atlas' which pulled the 'Diabaz' to the port of Korsakov.
