Barge ran aground at Hanau
In the morning of May 30, 2016, at 6.30 a.m. the "Dependant", 1226 ts (EU-No.: 02318619), ran aground on the Main at Hanau at river km 57,2. The ship which was bound to Lengfurt and had spent the night in Hanau port, having come from the Neckar river. The barge was loaded with 1130 tons anhydrit, a gypsum binder, and got stuck on the eastern river shore at the height of the port of Hanau. The hull was breached, and the barge suffered water ingress. The cargo remained unaffected. More than 70 men of the fire brigades from Frankfurt, Hanau, Großauheim, Steinheim and Klein-Auheim, the water rescue Maintal and divers were on site, who surveyed the ship from inside as the strong current made it impossible to make a bottom survey in the water. Soon it became clear that the barge was stable and not in danger of sinking in spite of the water ingress. The ice breaker "Elsava“ and the fire boat of the Frankfurt fire brigade were attached to the ship at 10.15 a.m. A first attempt to pull off the casualty at 12.20 p.m. failed. The fire boat was shifted to the stern and with both ships pulling there and the support of the engine of the "Dependant" she could be refloated at 12.35 p.m. She entered port at 12.50 p.m. with own power and became the subject of a hull survey by industrial divers there. The river had been barred for passing ship trafficduring the time of the salvage work. The accident was thought to have been caused by human error. When entering the Main fairway the master got too close to the shore and ran onto a reef at the height of a former wharf. There was no suspicion of drug consumtion or fatigueness.
