Ship left Gibraltar after class inspection

The 'CSSC Cape Town' has left Gibraltar waters as of Feb 23 after bunkering operations were completed. The explosion was believed to have been caused by a leak of gas from the coal cargo into the windlass control room. A full and detailed investigation will follow. All the relevant authorities have been informed and the incident has been reported to the P&I club, Insurers and vessel flag state. A full assessment of the ship has been carried out by attending classification society. Am approval from the local authorities and Class has been granted for the vessel's onward voyage.

Invesitigation into explosion launched

The Gibraltar authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of an explosion aboard the 'CSSC Cape Town', in the waters off Gibraltar on Feb 19. Four sailors were injured in the accident, two of them seriously. Rescue crews from Gibraltar treated two of the injured on board shortly after the accident, while two crew members were flown ashore to receive treatment at a hospital. The crew members who were brought ashore both have very serious burns. The authorities did not know for sure where the explosion on board the bulk carrier took place, but it was believed to have hit the front of the ship. The crew on the bulk career remained in constant contact with Gibraltar VTS at its mooring on the Gibraltar Anchorage West.

Four injured in explosion

The 'CSSC Cape Town' suffered an explosion in the forecastle in the night of Feb 19, 2021, in Gibraltar waters. The ship had arrived from Baltimore, USA, loaded with coal, and was destined for Algeciras. Two crew members suffered severe burns of 40% and 25% and were taken to hospital, two more crew were slightly injured and were treated on board. The Gibraltar Port Authority immediately deployed paramedic assistance to the vessel. There was no fire on board. The Captain has been in touch with the Port in Algeciras, who has offered all assistance in support of the operation to assist with the injured crew members. The ship left the Bay of Gibraltar several hours after the explosion and moored at the Gibraltar Anchorage West in pos. 36° 8.65' N 005° 22.58' W where it remained stationary as of Feb 21.
