Divers have discovered cocaine worth around £10million under the hull
Divers have discovered cocaine worth around £10million and weighing 137kg at the 'Cool Express in Sheerness on Oct 15, 2023, in four large holdalls hidden below the waterline, inside the sea chest. It was believed that the drugs were destined for the Netherlands. The Metropolitan Police diving unit took five hours to recover the drugs, which were behind bolted grates below the waterline. The divers were assisted by the Border Force National Deep Search Team. The cocaine would likely have had a UK street value in excess of £10 million once cut and sold. The rare find was one of only two underwater captures of Class A drugs of this type ever discovered in the UK, the last of which took place in Bristol in November 2021, when 46 kilos of cocaine were detected. The sale of these Class A drugs is controlled by gangs who inflict violence and exploitation on the communities. The Metropolitan Police dive team worked in difficult conditions to recover the drugs, assisted by the Border Force colleagues. The underwater search of the ship’s hull required detailed planning and partnership working to ensure this was a controlled, safe and efficient diving operation. All teams worked collaboratively to manage risks including reduced visibility, tidal movements and water depth. As the divers emerged from the water, shore based teams worked to conceal and secure the Class A drugs. The effort of all teams, we been able to prevent a large quantity of Class A drugs from reaching their intended destination.
