MSC KIA ORA and VEGA LUNA SOLD ENBLOC FOR AN UNDISCLOSED PRICE TO GREEK BYRS
MSC canceled charter after German based ship owner failed to pay wages in time
The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), canceled the charter of the "MSC Kia Ora" that was recently banned from Australian ports. The vessel was hired off immediately upon MSC becoming aware of the AMSA findings. MSC pointed out that it did not oversee the maintenance, or the workforce, of the chartered vessel. The AMSA’s investigation about crew wages was directed to the owner of the vessel. The containership was banned from accessing Australian ports for a period of three months after an inspection revealed that Germany-based Vega-Reederei, the ship’s owner, failed to ensure that crew were paid their wages in full and on time, and that critical equipment was maintained.
MSC not targeted by Australia vessel ban
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company does not oversee the maintenance, or the workforce, of the chartered vessel Kia Ora (IMO 9364344), the company announces in its press release. MSC is not the target of a recent Australian Maritime Safety Authority instruction about crew wages: this is directed to the owner of this vessel. The vessel was off-hired immediately upon MSC becoming aware of the AMSA findings. MSC has a 98% crew retention rate on the ships it owns and manages, thanks largely to the good working conditions, regular pay and best-in-class training opportunities for the crew MSC employs directly.
