Bulk carrier which was ready to leave Odesa still trapped after Russian attack
The port of Odesa suffered serious damage from a Russian missile attack early on Sep 25, 2023, and may not be able to handle potential grain shipments for the foreseeable future. Damage included the destruction of a multi-storey pier-side hotel, which has, however, been empty for years. A Russian Oniks missile destroyed a warehouse from which grain used to be carried to berthed vessels nearby. The damage could extend to the grain delivery system from the warehouse to the pier, along with assorted loading mechanisms. The attack also prevented the 'Comet' from leaving the harbour where it has been trapped there since Russia started the war against the Ukraine on Feb 24, 2022. The bulk carrier had been ready to leave the port before the attack. The vessel is controlled by the Blumenthal Asia, which earlier in September managed to get another bulk carrier out of Odesa, the'Puma' (built 2017). Ukraine last week had managed to resume some grain shipments from the other two ports, Pivdennyi/Yuzhnyy and Chornomorsk. Odesa, however, the port most frequently attacked by Russian missiles and drones over the past two months, remains off limits. The latest attack may even have damaged vessels there.
Lifeboat damaged in allision
The 'Comet', berthed in Varna, was struck by another vessel whocj was manoeuvring at the Bulyard Ship Yard on Nov 30, 2020, at 1 p.m. The starboard side lifeboat suffered damages and needed to be repaired or replaced. The other vessel remained unscathed.
Detained ship released after unloading of cargo
The "Comet" which had been detained in Mariupol for transporting 3000 tons products of the Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant, located on the territory of Donbas not controlled by Kiev, left the Mariupol port on Nov 9 and headed to Istanbul, where it arrived on Nov 20. The cargo that it was carrying remained in custody. Those involved in the incident will be prosecuted under the Criminal Code for financing terrorism. The cargo was transported from the Russian port Temryuk to Belgium.
