Sea swells delay container ship Patricia Schulte from entering Timaru's port for 14 hours
Swells over four metres high kept a 222 metre container ship out of Timaru's port for 14 hours on Thursday. PrimePort chief executive Phil Melhopt confirmed on Friday the container ship Patricia Schulte berthed in Timaru's port at 1.48am on Friday after waiting off the coast for the heavy seas to subside. Two employees injured and hospitalized during cargo opeations
Two men were injured, one seriously, on board the "Patricia Schulte" at the Port of Timaru in the morning of Mar 4 at 5.15 a.m. The accident involved two employees of the stevedoring company C3 and happened while unloading a container stack. The injured were both taken to Timaru Hospital. One of the men was then transferred to Christchurch Hospital with a serious back injury. The other sustained moderate injuries. Maritime New Zealand was investigating the incident. Safety regulators have been notified and their own investigation into the cause of the incident has commenced. C3 continued to provide support to the two employees affected. In October 2014, another C3 employee, a 50-year-old man, was admitted to Timaru Hospital after being hit by a container while working on a ship at the port. Two days ago a port worker fell and broke an arm at the Lyttelton Port of Christchurch.
