Containership assisted in rescue of yacht crew
The "ANL Elanora" jointly with the NSW Police assisted the crew of the stricken yacht "VAL" on a Trans-Tasman voyage in gale force winds and swells of six meters on March 7, 2017. The yacht activated its EPIRB at 3 p.m. about 210 nautical miles ENE of Sydney. On board were an Irish man and a French woman who had been in regular contact with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) since March 4 when they reported a broken rudder. The AMSA Rescue 660 search and rescue jet flew to the scene and dropped additional communications equipment however the equipment was unable to be recovered by the yacht due to the treacherous conditions. The AMSA then issued a broadcast to nearby shipping requesting help, a call answered by the "ANL Elanora" which diverted from its voyage from Tauranga to Sydney. The AMSA also asked for help from NSW Police which launched the "Nemesis" about 7 p.m. along with seven officers from Marine Area Command. Both the man and the woman were successfully transferred to the "Nemesis" in the morning of Mar 8 with the assistance of the "ANL Elanora" After completion of the rescue mission, the "Nemesis" made its way back to Sydney. The former Royal St. George Yacht Club sailor Nick Dwyer and the French woman Barbara Heftman arrived safely in Balmain in the night of March 8 aboard the NSW Police rescue vessel.
