Ferry suffered damaged engine piston

Fri May 31 12:26:50 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Clansman" wuffered a failure of one of the engines on May 26, 2019, enroute from Oban to Tiree, which required the vessel to return to Oban. The problem was connected to a damaged engine piston. Engineers were still working on the vessel. Sailings to Barra, South Uist, Mull, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay and Skye were cancelled, disrupted or diverted. Full service may not be restored until next week as repairs were taking longer than anticipated. To cover the gap, the "Lord of the Isles"’ daily service to Mallaig was cancelled. Instead, the vessel is running from Lochboisdale to Oban where she was undertaking sailings to Mull before heading back to the Western Isles in the late afternoon. On June 1, she will dock in Craignure, Mull, first to pick up additional passengers before continuing to Oban. Castlebay’s weekly open deck ferry service which carries hazardous goods such as bottled gas was cancelled. In addition, the "Isle of Lewis" now detours to Mull on her daily runs between Barra and the mainland.

Repairs of propeller damage completed

Thu May 24 13:52:56 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Clansman" which had suffered propeller damage during an impact while entering James Watt Dock, Greenock, on March 25, 2018, arrived at Oban on May 22 and resumed its service. Parts had to be sent to Denmark for repairs.

Ferry returns to service

Thu May 03 11:17:35 CEST 2018 Timsen

Ferry operator CalMac was moving closer to restoring full services after the completion of repairs to the "Clansman". Work on its propulsion system left the company's fleet short of vessels. An alternative timetable was introduced, with widespread disruption across CalMac's west coast routes. The Ardrossan-Campeltown service was withdrawn because of the ferry shortages, leaving users with a potential 135-mile road journey. The full fleet should be available by 23 May. As the "Clansman" returns to service, the "Hebrides" was to enter dry dock for an overhaul. The "Clansman" will have to return to dry dock in June for a short period in order to have its tailshaft replaced. CalMac has promised it will work to minimise the impact on customers. Work on the "Clansman" was delayed because parts of its propulsion system had to be sent to a specialist firm in Denmark. The vessel had been out of action since February and sailed from Greenock on May 1, 2018 at 1.30 p.m.
