Heavily damaged ships have to remain in port

Tue Apr 02 10:39:27 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Chemical Marketer" and "Viking Idun" had to remain in Flushing resp. Terneuzen until at least April 2. The tanker which berthed in the roro pontoon in the Quarles Port first had to be pumped out, the heavily damaged "Viking Indun" was still being investigated. The 171 passengers initiatlly remained on board. They had breakfast ashore and were then transported by bus to Bruges for the trip to the Belgian city that was planned for the day. They will have to continue their cruise with another ship of the company Viking Cruises. Nothing was yet known about the cause of the collision. The investigation can take several weeks. The tanker left the Quarles Port and headed to Rotterdam to discharge its cargo prior to repairs of the breaches at the port side foreship. On Apr 5 at 8.15 p.m. the tanker berthed at the chemical port in the Europort-Caland-Canal in Rotterdam at the Rubis company for this purpose. The "Chemical Marketer" berthed at the Rotterdam Offshore Group B.V. on April 15 at 4.30 p.m. She left Rotterdam on April 24 at 10.45 p.m., headed to Antwerp. The "Viking Idun" left the Damen Shiprepair in Amsterdam on April 15 and headed to Arnhem where she berthed on April 16 at 7.30 a.m. Dutch reports with photos: https://www.pzc.nl/zeeuws-vlaanderen/vijf-gewonden-bij-nachtelijke-aanvaring-tussen-cruiseschip-en-tanker-op-westerschelde~a8c4db32/ https://www.gva.be/cnt/dmf20190401_04294632/botsing-cruise-olietanker-we-zijn-door-het-oog-van-de-naald-gekropen

Collision on the Wester Scheldt

Mon Apr 01 09:30:20 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Chemical Marketer", enroute from Iskenderun to Antwerp, was in collision with the Swiss river cruise ship "Viking Idun" on its way from Antwerp to Ghent on the Westerschelde in Terneuzen on Apr 1, 2019, shortly after midnight. The accident happened near buoy 22, approximately at Churchilllaan. Both ships suffered damage above the waterline, but no leaks. The "Viking Idun" had 171 passengers and 44 crew members on board and was towed to a jetty in Terneuzen. It had suffered considerable damage to the bow. Five passengers were slightly injured. One slightly injured crew member was taken to the hospital with an ambulance for examination. Later the ship shifted to the Goese Quay, just past the lock complex in the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. No injuries were reported on board the tanker, but the ship had suffered several breaches in the hull. The ships were inspected in the morning to see if they can continue sailing. The passengers were still aboard the passenger ship. Loose air flap sent smoke plumes over Liverpool

Wed Dec 13 11:38:20 CET 2017 Timsen

Huge plumes of black smoke from the funnel of the "Chemical Marketer" at the Peel Ports dock in Liverpool alerted residents on Dec 12, 2017, around 9 a.m., rising fears that a fire had broken out aboard. The dark cloud was seen drifting across Bootle amd was visible for hours in the city and began after what was seemingly a routine procedure for the ship’s operators. It was caused by a loose air flap on the boiler. There was a short burst of black smoke from the funnel, due to air starvation, while the boiler was on low sulphur gas oil at Bootle Docks. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that there was no emergency incident at the docks and they were not in attendance. The fault was immediately diagnosed and repaired, and the operation was back to normal. The smoke was result of momentary poor combustion and was not harmful to the public. The “Chemical Marketer" had arrived in Liverpool from Tekirdaq. and after cargo handling would depart for Antwerp.
