No proof that cruise ship sailed too close to coast
The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources(DLNR) concluded its investigation of the 'Celebrity Edge' on May 30, 2024. A thorough investigation was conducted by the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) for the cruise ship, which had been alleged to be sailing in proximity off the Napali Coast, where it has to maintain a distance of at least 3000 feet from the shoreline. The DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) found no evidence that the ship violated any state rules while navigating off the Kauai Napali Coast Wilderness Park earlier in May. The DOCARE Officers in Kaua'i and O'ahu launched the investigation after the ship allegedly had been navigating close to the Napali Coastline, causing community concerns. The O'ahu officers boarded the vessel after it arrived atHonlulu and questioned the captain of the ship about the incident. The captain stated that the ship was under control with at least 30 meters of water depth. However, he was unsure about the ship's distance from the shore. Subsequently, the Kaua'i officers searched for witnesses to provide information on whether the cruise ship had been near the Napali Coastline. Despite their efforts, the investigators failed to find witnesses who could confirm that the ship was violating HAR rules. Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) was aware of these incidents and an investigation was continuing. The DLNR has also consulted with the US Coast Guard and Department of was aware on the matter. The 'Celebrity Edge' has since left Hawaii and was heading for Vancouver, where it is due to arrive on May 11, 2024.
