Ketch threatened to sink in Kiel bight
In the foremidday of June 4 the 'Carmelan' suffered water ingress in the Eckernförde bight which could not be controlled by the crew. The lifeboat 'Berlin' from the DGzRS station Laboe along with the 'Bayreuth' of the Federal Police and the lifeboat 'Fritz Knack' from Olpenitz were able to keep the ship from sinking. At 9.25 a.m. the master of the tug 'NOK 1' had reported that the ketch had started foundering while under tow. A crew member was dropped off on board and reported strong water ingress. The convoy was four nautilcal miles NW of Kiel l/h near the Stollergrund North buoy then. When the lifeboat 'Berlin' arrived at 9.50 a.m. the ship was flooded by two thirds and threatened to sink. Some minutes before, the 'Bayreuth' had arrived and taken the 'Carmelan' alongside to deploy a deatering pump. With on the whole five bilge pumps the ship could be kept afloat and was towed to a yard in Kiel-Friedrichsort for repairs. A crew member of one of the lifeboats supported the man from the 'NOK 1' on board during the transit.
