Search for missing passenger suspended

Mon Dec 07 09:26:45 CET 2020 Timsen

The US Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man who went missing after falling overboard from the 'Capt Jp.' in the Caloosahatchee River near Fort Myers on Dec 4, 2020. Missing was the 37-year-old Joel Henderson. Coast Guard crews searched a total of 11.5 hours between east of Cape Coral Bridge and west of Highway 41. Additional partner agencies include Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Fort Myers Beach Police, and Lee County Sheriff’s officers. Watchstandes at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received notification at approximately 8 p.m. from the operator of the dinner-cruise vessel stating a male passenger fell into the water not wearing a lifejacket. Coast Guard assets involved in the search: - 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Fort Myers Beach, - MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Air Station Clearwater, - MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Air Station Miami.

River cruise ship to be repaired as soon as possible

Tue Jan 29 10:41:21 CET 2019 Timsen

The "Captain JP III", damaged in an ice jam that knocked it and at least seven other vessels from their Hudson River moorings on Jan 25,, will be moved to a downriver shipyard for repairs. The owner Jim Pledger expected the repair work on the ship to cost between $75,000 and $125,000. The vessel was insured. Pledger was waiting for Coast Guard approval to move the passenger cruise ship to the North River Shipyard in Nyack, where it will be repaired under Coast Guard supervision. The worst of the damage was a 12-foot-by-eight-foot indentation. The ship will be in dry dock and the damaged piece removed, with a new piece welded in place. The rest of the damage was superficial. including bent handrails and two ornamental smokestacks that were knocked over. The ice jam that broke free and headed down the Hudson River hadknocked loose three tugs at a marina near the 112th Street Bridge, carrying one of them over the dam adjacent to the federal lock at Bond Street in Troy. The mass of ice and debris then struck the "Captain JP III" and several empty barges downstream, where they were eventually stopped by other tugs. One small barge was sunk just off Rensselaer. Ice jams have since formed near Saugerties and farther downstream near the West Point Military Academy. They'll have to be cleared before the "Captain JP III" can be towed to the shipyard, which is located a short distance from the site of the former Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard was monitoring the ice conditions daily and will give the go-ahead when it's safe to tow the vessel to the shipyard. River boat to be repaired in New York

Sun Jan 27 13:20:04 CET 2019 Timsen

The "Captain JP III" remained secured in the afternoon of Jan 26 on Front Street between State Street and Congress Street with a state Marine Highway vessel before being moved to a New York City shipyard for repairs. The vessel sustained the damage after breaking away from its mooring and striking the Congress Street bridge. Two of its smokestacks were knocked down after a tug initially broke free upriver andcrashed into the "Captain JP III", ripping it from its moorings. Three moored barges were torn loose from the Clemente docks south of the Congress Street Bridge. Some boats were stopped along the eastern bank between the Congress Street and Troy-Menands bridges. They broke free again, heading down to the Livingston Avenue Bridge. As the boats moved downstream, police closed a series of bridges between the Congress Street span and the Dunn Memorial Bridge.
