Fishing vessel rescued 21 fishermen
The "Cape Ferrat" responded to the distress call of the Kiribati-flagged f/v "Betty C", 1166 gt (IMO; 7397775), which caught fire 230 miles south of Jarvis Island on Nov 29, 2014. Watchstanders at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center received a distress alert from an emergency position indicating radio beacon at 2 a.m. The JRCC determined the EPIRB belonged to Kiribati-flagged, 140-foot fishing vessel "Betty C" and issued a safetynet broadcast to which the "Cape Ferrat" responded and arrived on scene at 9:30 a.m. The "Betty C" was on fire and its 21 passengers adrift in a small skiff after abandoning ship. The "Cape Ferrat" safely rescued all 21 passengers from the skiff and transferred them to American Samoa. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was unknown.The vessel’s owner was working to develop a plan to salvage the vessel.
